Africa Reader Series
We are excited to announce the 'Africa Reader' to be published jointly by ROAPE Publications and James Currey (Oxford) - a new thematic series based on material published within the journal over the last 25 years.

This Reader and the entire series began with a simple request - mostly from our subscribers and friends in Africa - to photocopy selected articles from the journal to be used as classroom texts. The diversity of these requests has been interesting: from sixth form colleges in Zimbabwe and Cuba to Ph.D seminars in North America.

Always based around themes, and initially on a very small scale, this initiative grew until we decided that it would be more useful to collaborate with our readers and Contributing Editors to produce the following themes over the next three years:
*The Politics of Transition: State and Development in Africa
*Gender Relations in Africa: the Politics of (dis)empowerment
*Popular Struggles and Indigenous Roots of Democratisation
*Contested Development: SAPs and Social Welfare
*The Environment in Africa: Crisis or Sustainability?
*Labour: Position and Prospects

The publication of these Readers will celebrate our 25th anniversay, a bittersweet occasion in that what began in 1974 with a group of close friends and activists has survived longer than it should have; the fact that we are still here attests to the niche that ROAPE has established over the years

The series editors are Giles Mohan and Tunde Zack-Williams.
