Review of African Political Economy
What is ROAPE Publications?
An Introduction to ROAPE - Who we are, and What we do
***

ROAPE Publications is comprised of an Editorial Working Group in the UK and its Contributing Editors worldwide. Since 1974, we have published the Review of African Political Economy, and over the years various books and reports associated with the journal and our conferences.

Our Politics
ROAPE focuses on understanding Africa's underdevelopment and challenging the causes. This involves looking at imperialism, capitalism (such as TNCs and donors), as well as the complex social and political forces in a changing global economy.

Each issue includes 5-6 articles which cover both theoretical concerns and critical political issues as well as equally-valuable shorter, more news-oriented or polemical pieces.

ROAPE positions Africa's underdevelopment within an historical analysis of global capitalism and imperialism to provide a counter-weight to the mass produced literature containing little or no critical analysis.

Landmarks
We have always aimed to distance ourselves from those academic journals which implicitly claim 'objectivity' and thereby are unable to take a definite political stance on any issues.

These have included transnational corporations (TNCs) and class struggle, peasant struggle and social welfare, attacking Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs) and International Financial Institutions (IFIs), and criticising Governance and corruption.

We believe that this commitment to current struggles gives ROAPE a liveliness which other journals lack.

Capturing the Future Conference
ROAPE's conferences provide a platform for critical debate on the state of Africa. The next conference 'Africa: Capturing the Future' will be held 28-30 April 2000 at the Africa Studies Centre at the University of Leeds, UK. There is a conference page on this site which is updated regularly.

Your Involvement
The involvement of the community of ROAPE writers and readers is needed to maintain the edge of the journal. We try to engage with all sections of our readership, from academic to grassroots, and we would welcome your contribution.
