Republic of Zimbabwe
---

Zimbabwe's largest cities are Harare (the capital, in Mashonaland North - formerly Salisbury) and Bulawayo (in Matabeleland South).

Northern Rhodesia became Zambia in 1964, but Southern Rhodesia was denied independence when the Smith regime issued its Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI). It was not until inclusive elections took place in 1980, that the first majority-rule government was formed by the ZANU-PF party, with Robert Mugabe as Zimbabwe's first prime minister.
