Republic of Uganda
---

Uganda is an East African republic, capital Kampala.

It was under British rule until independence in 1962 within the British Commonwealth. In 1967 it became a republic with an executive president until a military coup in 1971 led by Idi Amin. Amin declared himself head of state, expelled all Asians, and ... In 1979 Amin was overthrown by Milton Obote. An unsteady coup in 1985 led the Military Council to try to negotiate power sharing with the NRM (National Resistance Movement), but failed and the NRM took Kampala and their leader Yoweri Museveni became president in 1986. The National Resistance Council was appointed to run country with mandate to form a constitution.
