Togo (République Togolaise) is a West African republic, with its capital Lomé. Achieved independence from France in 1960 under Sylvanus Olympio, overthrown by the military in January 1963 (the first West African coup) in favour of his exiled rival Nicholas Grunitsky. In 1967 Lt-Col Eyadéma established full military rule, and has remained President since. In 1990-91 prolonged demonstrations forced Eyadéma to agree to multi-partyism and a reduction in his powers. He then however used his military and regional support to destabilise the interim regime and reassert his authority. |
