Senegal (République du Sénegal) is on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, and entirely surround The Gambia with which it formed the (now collapsed) Senegambia Confederation. The capital, Dakar, is on Cape Verde, the westernmost tip of the continent. Achieved independence from France in 1960, under Pres Senghor, architect of an effective single-party presidentialist system which survived his own retirement in favour of Abdou Diouf (1980) and class and regionalist opposition movements. Carefully managed multipartyism was reintroduced in 1976, with the ruling party retaining power, as it has since, with growing difficulty and in the context of persistent economic problems and armed campaigns for regional autonomy by the Casamance region. |
