Republic of Rwanda
---

Rwanda (formerly Ruanda-Urundi) is a land-locked state in central Africa, with Kigali.

It was a colony of Belgium, which encouraged ethnic divisions resulting in 1959 in Hutu attacks on Tutsi, many oif whom fled to Uganda. Hutu monopolised power through parties or, after 1973, the Army under Habiyarimana. Economic decline and spoils politics in the 1980s intensified ethnic conflict, resulting in a Tutsi invasion in 1990, civil war, and an externally-enforced power-sharing agreement, undermined by genocidal attacks on Tutsi in 1994 and the regime's flight regime to Zaire. The post-94 RPF regime has encountered major problems with reconciliation, reconstruction and security.
