Republic of Niger
---

Niger (République du Niger) is a land-locked Sahelian state in central west Africa. The capital of Niamey is in the southwest of the country on the Niger river.

Achieved independence from France in 1960, under Hamani Diori. During the 1973-74 drought Diori was ousted by Col. Seyni Kountchú. Military rule continued until 1991 when a national conference restored civilian rule, and then a multiparty system. Mohamed Ousmane was elected President in 1993, but was overthrown by a coup in January 1996. General Ibrahim Maïnassara had himself elected president in July, in a poll seen by some as rigged. The later elections for the National Assembly were boycotted by many parties.
