Republic of Mozambique
---

The Republic of Mozambique lies on the southeast coast of Africa. Its capital and largest city is Maputo in the south, close to the border with South Africa.

It achieved independence from Portugal in 1975. Frelimo (which had fought an armed struggle) became the ruling party and in 1977 declared itself a Marxist- Leninist vanguard party, emphasising villagisation, state farms, and 'democratic centralism'. Mozambique was destabilised by Renamo (backed by Rhodesia and South Africa), and by Frelimo's own policy contradictions when Renamo gained some popular support, despite its violent practices. The 1992 Rome Peace Accords led to multi-party elections in 1994, which Frelimo won for a five year term.
