Mauritania (République Islamique de Mauritanie) is a west African republic, with capital Nouakchott. It achieved independence from France in 1960, under Pres. Ould Daddah, overthrown in 1978 by a coup which introduced a long period of unstable military rule marked by food insecurity, economic crises and conflict between the dominant 'Arab' northerners and 'African' southerners. Col. Ould Taya, who came to power in 1984, introduced 'democratic' reforms in 1991; elections since then have not been permitted to result in significant opposition representation. |
