Mali (République de Mali) is a land-locked west African state with capital Bamako, and regional capitals of Gao, Kayes, Mopti, Sikasso, Segou, and Timbuktu. It achieved independence from France in 1960 under Modibo Keita, overthrown in 1968 by a coup led by Moussa Traoré, himself removed by the military in March 1991 after pro-democracy demonstrations. A transitional military/civilian government reintoriduced competitive elections in 1992, with Alpha Konaré becoming President - but facing economic problems and long-standing resistance from Tuareg pastoralists. A peace agreement was reached with the Tuareg in 1995, and Konaré was re-elected in 1997 in partially-boycotted elections. |
