Republic of Madagascar
---

Madagascar (Repoblika n'i Madagaskar) is an island state off the south east coast of Africa, with its capital Antanarivo facing the Indian Ocean.

It fell into French hands in 1895 and became a colony in 1896 when the former Queen was exiled. It became a republic in 1958, and fully independent in 1960, but the civilian government was overthrown and martial law declared in 1975. A new constitution was approved with executive power residing with the president, and the Revolutionary Supreme Council and the National People's Assembly were dissolved in 1991.
