Lesotho is a landlocked mountainous state, with Maseru its largest city and capital. It is entirely surrounded by South Africa. Formerly Basutoland, it became independent within the British commonwealth in 1966 as a monarchy. The constitution suspended in 1970, until 1974 when a national assembly was established. In 1986, a coup transferred power to King Moshoeshoe III. In 1990 the King's powers were revoked, and transferred to a council of ministers. Later 1990, the king was deposed by his son (King) Letsie III. There was another coup in 1991 led by Col Elias Ramaema, and elections were promised for 1992. |
