Kenya is a republic is east Africa, with its largest city the central capital Nairobi, and the second Mombassa, a port and tourist centre on the Indian Ocean.

Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963, and became a republic in 1964. In 1982, the constitution was changed to make Kenya a one-party state with Daniel arap Moi's KANU as the single legal political party.
