Republic of Guinea
---

The capital of Guinea is Conakry.

Achieved independence from France in 1958, under Pres. Sekou Touré, who introduced a single-party presidentialist regime, finally overthrown in a context of corruption and economic crisis by the army in 1984. The military regime has attempted to transform itself into a 'democratic' civilian regime, holding elections in 1993 in which Pres. Lansana Conté retained office, as did his party in 1995.
