The capital of Gabon is Libreville. Achieved independence from France in 1960, under Pres. Léon Mba, restored to power by France in 1964, after demonstration s and a coup. Mba's death in 1967 brought to power Omar Bongo, whose single-party presidentialist regime retained power until 1990, aided by revenues from timber and oil. Strikes and riots in 1990 forced democratic reforms but the regime survived. Further reforms in the mid-90s reduced but did not eliminate electoral manipulation; Bongo remains President. |
