Equatorial Guinea consists of Bioko island (in the Bight of Biafra), Annobón and Corsico islands (in the Gulf of Guinea) and the mainland of Rio Muni. The capital Malabo is on Bioko. Achieved independence from Spain in 1968. Pres Macias was replaced in the 1979 coup by Col Nguema. The ruling PDGE allowed a new consistition to be established in 1991, but has won all elections following boycotts from other parties including the Progress Party which was banned in 1997. |
