Democratic Republic of Congo
---

The Democratic Republic of Congo was formerly known as the Republic of Zaïre until 1997. It has a small coastline on the Atlantic in the east, and stretches to the capital Kinshasa on the Congo river, and westwards into the interior.

Achieved an abrupt independence from Belgium in 1960, under Patrice Lumumba as Prime Minister. External intervention and regionalism destabilised Lumumba, who was murdered in 1961. With CIA encouragement, Col Mobutu seized power in 1965, retaining it until 1997, after two decades of gross corruption and economic decline culminating in the collapse of the state, a bogus 'democratisation' process, and the armed seizure of power by Laurent Kabila. Kabila himself now faces an armed revolt, supported by his former regional backers, Rwanda and Uganda.
