Chad is a land-locked sahelian state, with capital N'Djaména (formerly Fort Lamy). Independent since 1960, this landlocked former French colony has been among the least stable of African states since Pres Tombalbaye was removed in a coup in 1975, in part the result of continuous opposition by the regionally-based armed opposition movement Frolinat. Power was thereafter contested between rival warlords, notably Hissene Habré, and their external backers, including Libya. The introduction of a multiparty system in 1991, under Pres Idris Déby, did not end internal war. |
