Côte d'Ivoire (République de la Côte d'Ivoire) is a West African state on the Gulf of Guinea, with its administrative capital in Yammossoukro, and its commercial and financial centre being the port of Abidjan. Achieved independence from France in 1960, under Pres. Houphouet, architect of an effective single-party presidentialist system which survived reforms in the 1980s and 1990s, and his death in 1993. While the hurried reintroduction of multipartyism in 1990 arose in part from mass pressures and economic crisis, it was managed so as to permit the ruling party to retain power, causing the opposition to boycott the presidential election of 1995, (but not the legislative elections). Houphouet's constitutional successor, Henri Konan-Bédie, remains President. |
