Central African Republic
---

The Central African Republic (Republique Centrafricaine) has its capital in Bangui near the border with Congo-Kinshasa.

Achieved independence from France in 1960, under David Dacko, overthrown in 1966 by the subsequently notorious Col Bokassa, whose own corrupt, violent regime was ended after he had crowned himself 'Emperor' when French intervention restored Dacko in 1979. Dacko was again removed, by Gen Kolingba, in 1981, and Kolingba by Ange Patasse, elected President in 1993. Mutinies in 1996 resulted in French intervention, a regionally-backed peace agreement (1997) and finally a UN peacekeeping force (1998). Elections in late 1998 saw the defeat of Patasse.
