Botswana is a southern African land-locked republic, capital Gaborone, formerly a colony of Britain under the name Bechuanaland. It became a republic within the Commonwealth in 1966. Though it is a largely pastoral land, with large game reserves, a large part of the country's income now comes from minerals - mainly diamonds, copper-nickel. There are elections every five years. Elections for the national assembly and the presidency are held every five years, and the general election of 1994 was won by Botswana Democratic Party with 67% of the seats against the Botswana National Front. President Festus Mogae took office in 1998. |
