Burkina Faso is land-locked West African state formerly known as Upper Volta. Its capital is Ouagadougou. It achieved independence from France in 1960 under Yameogo, overthrown by a coup in 1966, which begins a period of mainly military rule (1966-84). Col Thomas Sankara, made Prime Minister in 1983, seized power in 1984 in a coup backed by junior officers and radical urban groupings. His attempts at radical reform ended in 1987 when he was murdered, and his second-in-command, Baliase Compaore took power. Despite the introduction of competitive election in 1991, Compaore remains President. |
