Tunisia (Al-Djoumbouria Attunusia) is a north African state on Mediterranean, with capital Tunis. It was a French protectorate from 1881-1956, and became an independent sovereign state in 1956. Within a year, its assembly abolished the monarchy and declared a republic under Pres Bourguiba. In 1975, Bourguiba declared himself 'president for life', and retained power until 1987 when deposed by Pres Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Elections followed in 1989, and the RCD (Rassemblement Consitutionnel Democratique) won all seats with 99% of the vote, and Ben Ali re-elected President. |
