Abstract of Briefing
Title:Violence against Women in Tanzania
Location:Vol.20 No.56 (March 1993), pp111-116
The issue of violence against women is erupting on the political agenda in many African countries. The two excerpts below show how one organisation in Tanzania is taking up this question. The Tanzania Media Women's Association (TAMWA) was formed in 1986 and has been publishing a magazine, Sauti ya Siti (Women's Voice) since 1988. It has been active in fighting for many causes relating to women's and children's rights and women's hardships: health, abortion, AIDS, the effects upon women of environmental degradation, their limited role in the labour force, harassment at work, street children, the problems of fetching water and fuel, poverty etc. It organises meetings and workshops, and aims to disseminate its views widely through all forms of media using Kiswahili as well as English.
