The phenomenal expansion of the education sector in Zimbabwe since 1980 has often been characterised as one of the major achievements of the post-independence government. The relevant statistics lend credence to this claim. In 1979 about 800,000 children attended primary school. Almost 2.3 million attended in 1989. Whereas there were 74, 966 students enroled in secondary schools in 1980, the number had shot up to 695, 612 in 1989. The number of secondary schools to cater for this massive expansion increased from 177 in 1979 to 1, 502 in 1989.
