Aids, Africa and Racism by Richard C Chirimuuta && Rosalind J Chirimuuta by Meredeth Turshen These two books are welcome additions to our limited knowledge and poor understanding of a highly sensationalized topic. AIDS in Africa: The Social and Policy Impact, the useful if uneven volume edited by Norman Miller and Richard C. Rockwell, brings together 20 papers, a few commissioned but most presented at the US African Studies Association meeting in November 1987. The collection is divided into four sections: epidemiology and current assessment; historical and ecological implications; issues of management, policy and politics; and issues of society and education. The views are divergent, ranging from those of USAID and the medical establishment to those of progressive social scientists. The data, which change monthly, are reasonably current, but in some cases they do not tally with World Health Organization sources.
