Abstract of Briefing
Title:Update on Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto
Author:Meredeth Turshen
Location:Vol.15 No.42 (Summer 1988), pp81-82
Concerning 1,800 striking student nurses and auxiliary workers at Baragwanath Hospital. Horrific conditions prompted 101 doctors to write to SAMJ, which endorsed the complaints in its editorial. An article in The Star described overcrowding with patients sleeping on floors and severe sanitation problems at Bara, which is a teaching hospital associated with the University of Witwatersrand (which has made no response). The Department of Hospital Services responded to the letter by refusing to confirm some employees in their posts. Despite a positive response when challenged in the Supreme Court, six doctors have been forced to write apologies or leave. The National Medical and Dental Association condemned the victimisation.
