Abstract of Briefing
Title:South African Destabilization and Health in Mozambique
Author:Julie Cliff and Abdul Razak Noormahomed
Location:Vol.15 No.42 (Summer 1988), pp76-80
An earlier article (see link below) looked at the difficulties faced by Mozambique in maintaining its progressive health care policies, against the background of SA destabilization. The article concluded that, although the picture was gloomy, Mozambique health was holding the line. The outside observer, faced with a barrage of photos of starving children and stories of massacres in the press, might well feel that by the end of 1987, Mozambique was yet another African basket case. The belief of many donors that only horrific images will loosen peoples' purse strings has obscured the success of the Mozambican government in holding on in the face of SA's onslaught. Discusses Impact on People's Health; Impact on the Health Services; Indirect Impact on Health.
