Drought, desertification, deforestation are the technical terms conservations use to describe Africa's environmental crisis. This issue moves beyond these simple critiques of simplistic arguments, documenting the need for a deeper understanding between the relation between environment and the modes of production: deterioration in urban housing and sanitation; rural pastoral and agricultural production - illustrating the central questions about the political economy of environment. Countries discussed are Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia.
