 showcase black hospital in Soweto / 1,800 auxiliary workers and student workers walked off their job in November 1985 / General and Allied Workers Union said they had legitimate pay grievance / Pay below poverty line / last pay rise in 1983 and SA inflation is 13% / All strikers dismissed, some student nurses evicted from their residences / Armed soldiers rounded up 300 workers and forced them at gunpoint to collect their final pay packets / Two days later, 100 black workers at Johannesburg and Hillbrow hospitals threatened action unless Bara workers reinstated
