| | Discusses the effects of commodity production on rural households in Southern Malawi during the colonial period. Argues that the effects on relations - particular those of gender - within the household can only be understood within a wider context of inter-household relations and the interventions of the colonial state. Draws on two case studies of commoditisation, occurring in the same historical period and within the same region, and shows the different effects of this on the position of women within their own households and communities. |
