The historical roots of the MNR in Mozambique. During the liberation struggle opposition to Frelimo was expressed through rival organisations, such as Coremo and a host of smaller groups that came and went, or through former Frelimo renegades and brigands, or through counter-insurgency 'Special Groups' sponsored by the Portuguese. In 1975 a number of these elements came together in Rhodesia to form the MNR with the encouragement of the Rhodesian regime. In 1980, the MNR moved to SA where it was reinforced through agreements with other Mozambican dissident groups. Substantial SA sponsorship made it an important weapon of destabilisation under the Total Strategy.
