 The days when each country in Africa was an island are over, and few know this better than South Africa's vast and wealthy gold mining industry. Migrant labour for the Union's mines - long the fly-wheel of Union 'Native policy' - is today being drawn not only from the Union, but from nine countries in Southern and Central Africa, reaching as far north as Tanganyika.
