| | Two of the articles in this number of the Review address themselves to the continuing debate on the nature of capitalist development in Africa. Much of this debate has centred on the existence or non-existence of an independent capitalist development led by an independent national bourgeoisie, on the progressive or non-progressive character of whatever type of capitalist development was deemed to be taking root, and on the nature and role of the post-colonial state in this process. In their contributions to this number, both Depelchin and Beckman return to these issues albeit from the different perspectives of on the one hand, Zaïre and on the other, Nigeria. |
