Abstract of Briefing
Title:Tourism in Gambia

This is an analysis of a WB/UN programme for the development of the economy through tourism. While 85% of the country is agricultural, the remaining have not provided the expertise/workforce needed to support a tourist industry; hiring is of expatriate staff, tourist hotels are ghetto's and the income generation reverts to the foreign-owned, in this case Swedish. There is a drain on the economy in the amount of imported goods needed to maintain the industry and the intangible consequences are alarming; culture, prostitution; armed robbery; truancy among school children and the effects on the culture of the Gambian society.
