These collections of papers were originally presented at conferences in 1973 and 1972. They attempt to go beyond a mere critique of 'modernization theory' , by developing alternative perspectives through field studies and theoretical reviews. While Gunder Frank's theories underlie almost all these approaches, the authors adopt a critical stance towards his work, and they attempt to go beyond his formulations. This review concentrates on the theoretical themes of the books, though there are several papers useful mainly to specialists in the relevant areas.
