Ayoub Tabari's review of Nyerere's latest book - 'Freedom and Development' - which appeared in the last issue of the Review, epitomised a position which is gaining more currency than it deserves. One strand of the argument advanced by proponents of this position is undoubtedly correct - namely that which identifies Tanzania's shift towards authoritarianism and deplores the growing penetration of foreign capital and management. Yet, the argument as a whole is tendentious and fundamentally incorrect.
